West China Union University, predecessor of West China University of Medical Sciences (WCUMS), was established in 1910, by the joint effort of five Christian missions from the United States, Great Britain and Canada. In 1950, the University was taken over by the central people's Government and was renamed as Sichuan medical college. In 1985, as a result of China's educational reformation and development, this university was renamed as West China University of Medical Sciences. West China University of Medical Sciences has been one of the 11 medical universities under the supervision of ministry of health. It is one of the very few medical universities accepted by the central Government's "211 PROJECT" .There are about 100 universities in "211 Project"

It means only these 100 universities are to receive major government support and concern for the 21st century with the aim of developing into world class universities.. Under the principle that top medical institution should be under top university, all top-level medical universities in China went through the process of merger in the year 2000 and subsequent years. Thus, Beijing Medical University has been merged with Beijing University, Shanghai Medical University has been merged with Fudan University and SunYat-Sen Medical University has been merged with Sun Yat-Sen University. Likewise, West China University of Medical Sciences was merged with Sichuan University in the year 2000. After merger, West China University of Medical Sciences is known as West China Center of Medical Sciences, Sichuan University.

Hostel:

The college provides hostel to the international students. Two persons share a room with air conditioner, attached bathroom, color TV, telephone, bed with required amenities and furniture, free hot―drinking--- water heater, refriger, public laundry and kitchen, internet access.
