Soochow University is located in Suzhou, an ancient city popularly hailed as “Paradise on Earth”. It is one of the national key universities under the “211 Project” and also a key comprehensive university of Jiangsu Province. Originally founded in 1900 In its history of more than 100 years, Soochow University has turned out over 250 thousand graduates, many of whom have become government leaders, well-known scholars and prominent figures in various fields. Xu Deheng, Zhou Gucheng, Fei Xiaotong, Lei Jiejong, Sun Qimeng, Zhao Puchu, Qian Weichang, Dong Yinchu, Li Zhengdao, Ni Zhengyu, Zheng Beijing, Du Zhiwei, Yang Tieliang, Zha Liangyong, Tan Jiazhen, Liu Jiankang have all studied or worked here.
At present, Soochow University runs 12 post-doctoral stations, 6 primary disciplines for doctoral degrees, 84 Ph.D. programs, 208 master’s programs, 10 professional master’s programs as well as 103 undergraduate programs. In addition, the University has 4 national key disciplines, 24 provincial and ministerial key disciplines and 10 provincial key laboratories. It also houses 2 national training bases for the research and teaching personnel in basic sciences and liberal arts, and one base for humanities and social sciences research appraised by the Chinese Ministry of Education. The total enrollment of students is more than 50,000, including 11,990 doctor and mater degree students, 24,000 undergraduates and 9925 students for formal continual education. In its more than 4,106 faculty and staff members, 4 are members of the Chinese Academy and 1,126 are professors and associate professors.
Today, Soochow University consists of 5 campuses with a total area of more than 2.05 million square meters and a construction area of around 1.33 million square meters. The university library has a collection of over 4 million volumes and subscribes to over 2,800 domestic and foreign journals and magazines. Soochow University publishing house edits and publishes Soochow University Academic Journal in four different editions as well as many other scholarly works
